Sunday Work Party, October 4: Planting garlic; clearing beds, mulching, cover crop seeding

Lots of activity in the garden on this workday, starting at 9 AM.

Mostly clearing beds and seeding with cover crops. Though one bed had been recently seeded with spinach (as per the tiny white sign).

Notice the lettuces. Still plenty of salad greens, including arugula. Plus, still a few carrots to pull up.

Elisha and Dave prepared a bed for garlic, and planted them. Marcella took a break to watch.

BTW: Notice the sea of plants in the background of the above pic. That’s sweet potatoes, Elisha says she planted them back in May. Hopefully, they’ll ready to harvest in three to four weeks.

Here’s a photo of sweet potato plants this morning from another angle. Notice fig tree on the left. Very few figs, and squirrels get most of them . .  .

One new person joined the work party, John, who hails from another part of town but attended the annual Master Gardener event at which Elisha recently gave a presentation.

Here’s John sowing seeds for cover crop over newly cleared and mulched bed.

Marita kept bringing in wheelbarrow’s full of mulch for newly cleared cover crop (and garlic) beds.

Here’a bed that was cleared, mulched, and seeded with cover crops a few weeks ago.

Finally. The drama for this morning was provided by the question: time to take out the tomato plants? (Remember, we had an enormous tomato harvest this year.)

Decision: yes, but first get any tomatoes that are still on the plants.

Okay. Clearing begins . . .

What that tangled mass looked like afterwards, a newly mulched bed with Dave seeding cover crops.

Wow. Hardly recognize the garden!
