Re: yesterday’s canning project in the new Kitchen at the Southwest Library branch: Dave told me this morning that this kitchen cost $600,000! Wow. And that the problem is, the city always uses a large “contractor,” and they always charge way more money than a self-employed person (like himself!) would. He waxed on, in a very interesting manner, about how this is an issue everywhere, and won’t be fixed until there is some kind of a governmental change that I didn’t pick up on, but know that he’s thought about it for a long time.

 

In any case, Carissa joined the group after Elisha and Dave left, and helped Ian and Grace (friends of Tim and Emily who organized the project along with Elisha) to clean up. Elisha: “I’m going to invite Ian and Grace to Community Dinners!” Yes!

She said the entire project took almost four hours, “but with lots of chatting.”

Here’s what she and Dave brought home.

“Tom and Emily took about 15+ canned pints, and we gave another 10 pints to others who helped. And we will have more tomatoes too.”

 

Meanwhile, the very next day, today, this morning, early:  Work Party in the garden.

The agenda:

PLANT POTATOES. (Second crop this year.)

Elisha cuts them. . . .

. . . while Marcella and Marita dig a trench in the fatabulous soil we’ve built up over so very many years.

Then, planting the potatoes. First put them in, one by one . . .

Then make sure they are 10 inches apart.

Thus ends a very busy weekend!
