SUNDAY WORK PARTY: Terrific turnout!
Ann Kreilkamp

Ann Kreilkamp / 3 min read

Probably a dozen folks, neighbors, one neighbor’s teenage son, friends, former and possibly future Green Acres Villagers, plus their friends — all converged in the big garden for a work party that featured planting sweet potatoes and tomatoes. Plus more mulching, of both beds (wood chips) and paths (leaf mulch), and I don’t know what else.

My job is to take photos and keep this blog. And as I went around snapping them, I heard all sorts of conversations, as urban farmers, some of whom had never met until now, deeply engaged with one another, on their knees, their hands in the soil. A wondrous morning. Went on until noon.

P.S. Then, in the late afternoon, I gave one of our City Council members, Isaak Isare, who was here at my house to participate in a GANA (Green Acres Neighborhood Association) meeting, “the tour,” and he was blown away by what we are doing here in this little Green Acres Village within Green Acres Neighborhood. Says he wants to come to our Dinners. Okay!

And prior to that, the day before, I had introduced our way of life to two people who would like to begin a similar project of their own. Plus, another group who had to cancel the day before, but to whom I will give “the tour” sometime next week.

The point is, to get the tiny Green Acres Permaculture Village template seeded into the larger community.

And, at this point, the seed does seem to have not only taken root, but is beginning to sprout.

This, thanks to the hundreds who have participated, in both bi-weekly Community Dinners, and weekly Garden Work Parties, over the past 15 years. And even before that, to when I first took the Permaculture training, back in 2006.

The best things in life take a long time to mature, says this old crone!

Here you go!

Some already starting; others receiving instructions from our garden maven, Elisha (with hat).

Hmmm. Who is this? Aha, four “principals,” always around. Let’s get a closer view.

Here you go: Dave (Elisha’s partner), Elisha watering, Mere (who lives nearby) and Marcella (neighbor).

Emerson, on right, brought a high school friend from North Carolina to show off “Green Acres,” where she lived for a year. Emerson is at IU, in grad school, getting some kind of dual Masters degree, all having to do with community and the earth beneath our feet. Reminds me of our own motto: “Growing Community from the Ground Up.”

Elisha says she’s not sure what this yellow-flowering “weed” is, but it attracts the bugs and likely the bees. Not hurting anything, so it remains.

Broccoli head!

Here’s a relatively new person. Sweet and shy. Unfortunately, I can’t recall her name.

Sweet potato plants in . . .

On the left, onions or garlic? Can’t remember which has the flat stalks, which the round ones. We have both.

Herbs with brassicas.

Over and out!
